Interesting Questions

I think others can relate to some of the questions we get asked with a dog in public that we politely answer and then later smile. I had one of those today! Upon leaving a public restroom a man came up to me and asked me - are you blind? yes, I replied and then he asked but can you see something to which I replied, yes I have a small fuzzy peephole in the center (I think that helped him understand why I needed a guide dog) to which he then asked - how did your dog know to take you into the ladies restroom and not the men's restroom? I explained that I needed to know generally where I was going before I could direct her and also told him some of the commands she knew. He seemed a bit relieved and said - I know those dogs are amazing but I just couldn't figure out how she could know to take you to the right restroom! I laughed thinking that it took some courage to ask a lady how she found the women's restroom! I also smiled remembering the time that I had helped my fabulous friend, Schalee, find the restroom and we had entered the wrong one -- oops, the blind leading the blind. I am much more careful now to get really good directions prior to entering.

People just don't have a clue - nor do they stop and think about what comes out of their mouths before they say it.

The questions I get all the time are:

1. How does your dog know when the light is green?

2. Can she read the street signs?

AND this is not common (THANK GOD!)but very funny:

3. Does your dog also read the menu to you?

I know they're smart, but people sometimes give these dogs too much credit!

And don't make me start with the "Blind & Bathroom" stuff. I have too many of those in my cane days! Shame on Me!!!

I love reading your blog! You can make me laugh and cry at the same time. I do have to say, puppy raisers can get weird comments too. One time I was in the drive-thru lane at McDonalds, with Sterling in his puppy coat, and the girl looked at me and went..."Oh my god, you are blind!"

I hope it is ok if I link your blog!
