Doing something scary.

Conversation last night with Steve.  B:  Tomorrow on our fashion challenge  is to wear something scary!  I'm trying to decide what that looks like.  I probably need to go borrow something from  Natalie's closet!  S:  What about those new boots you bought that you haven't worn.  B:  Perfect!  Yes, I love them but I'm a little scared to wear them.

I think I've generally always had an adventurous spirit and a desire to live from a place of love not fear.  I love this quote:

Do one thing every day that scares you.  Eleanor Roosevelt

One of my friends saw that hanging on our refrigerator and said - Becky you don't have to seek it - isn't it around you every day with Retinitis Pigmentosa.  Perhaps?  Adventure?  There is life - lots of it to be lived and embraced fully from a place of love.

I think this quote took on a new level when I began training with my white cane.  I had to evaluate the fear of walking alone and trusting this unknown tool and feeling and looking different.  I've said before - the cost of not taking that leap were higher than those fears.  I did it and felt such a sense of freedom.   There was no looking back.  When a 7th grade client told me yesterday she felt different for some situations, I could understand.  She smiled and got that I understood even though our situations were different.  In that moment, my journey of feeling different and it being a little scary was all worth it.   We then talked about all that she loved.  Taking that risk of doing something scary helps us feel love deeper, too.

Another client recently started asking me some questions as we finished up our time together.  So how do you run?  I explained.  So how do you tandem bike? I explained.  So how did you go to school?  I explained.  So how did you get to work today?  I explained.  You really like to garden?  Yes.  Really not a big deal and I tried to explain quickly so we could get the topic off me (boring), but she did remind me that each of these experiences at one time were a little scary.  She then said, okay I can do my scary things.  I reflected on those mentors that have helped me see that I can do scary things -- even wear boots that I was wondering about :) and now I love!

Have a great weekend!  Party tonight with 20 people that I love - not scary :).  Beginning to teach nine, 13 year olds in Sunday School.  That sounds a little scary but I'm sure as I come from a place of love it won't be quite so scary :).

The boots are cute and I appreciate your reminder to do something scary. Fear can sometimes rule our moments.

I love this. Yes, I can do scary things. Scary things are empowering. Scary things help you grow. Scary things teach you about a strength you didn't know you have. Scary is wonderful. Thank you for the reminder.

Happy seeing beautiful!
