All in a Guide Dog's Day, #1

Sometimes I get asked, so what exactly does Cricket do for you? So much! I decided I would try this week to document some of the basics of what she does All in a Day's Work. So helpful #1 (not in any order, just as I've thought of them). Cricket stops for any change in elevation. If there is a step either going up or down, she will stop and make sure I know that it is there before I let her know to proceed. I will tell her good girl. She generally knows by my foot position that I am now aware of the step. Over the years, this becomes a very quick, smooth transition. She stops, I prod with my foot, tell her good girl, and we proceed.

How does this help?  In general, I walk safely without falling off a step, ledge, or tripping on something.  My shins thank Cricket often for this sweet service.

Great work, Cricket! I was just working Alfie on this today. I am always SO impressed to see working teams do this so smoothly and quickly, as you describe -- once I got to do a blindfold walk w/ my 1st graduated puppy but I was soooo slow on this! My poor Willie practically went to sleep waiting for me...

I love learning about Cricket. One day Hanna may need a guide, and I really hope he/she is as reliable as Cricket!
