Resilience

Resilience. Getting back up. This past weekend, my daughter,   Natalie , Cricket and I were on our way for a girls outing in Park City. We were ready to turn off onto the exit when bang -- we were hit from the rear -- bang again and again. It happened so fast. The car behind us was reaching for his cell phone and hit into us and then another car. Natalie took the brunt of the hits suffering a concussion and was taken by ambulance to the hospital. Cricket and I were taken in a fire truck to the hospital to be with her. Cricket seemed unphased by the whole experience, and I only had some minor stiffness in my neck. In an instant our shopping/lunch excursion turned into grief and gratitude that we were going to be 'okay' in time. (Get well soon, Natalie. I understand that concussions are exhausting and take time to heal.) Natalie is probably tired of my just wanting to hug her :)! She is an amazing, resilient woman that has taught me much ... we'll get back to our shopping! Get well soon, Natalie. Monday I had a root canal. I know how to have fun :)! I wanted a diversion during this experience so I took my ipad to listen to a book. It worked wonderfully. I got so involved in my book - Reviewing Flourish by Martin Seligman and thinking about ways to implement it that I didn't realize how painful the process was til I was finished.  Ouch!  I'll return back next week for the rest of the root canal and the next chapter of my book :). I was really excited that I was able to in the middle of the process when I lost my place in the book I was able to use the speech and navigate my way through. Today Steve and two of my friends ran the Deseret News 10K with me.  We had so much fun.  They are amazing and inspire me to keep on going when I really want to stop.  I can imagine that it isn't easy to tether me through the crowds of a run ... they do it with such grace and fun.  Then, as if that wasn't enough fun we came home and ran 10 more miles to get in our 16 in preparation for our marathon coming up!  Thus, I walked in and was happy to be greeted by this sweet girl that loves to lick a sweaty face.

You don't make excuses! Most people would say, "I was in a car accident, I'm going to cancel my root canal," or, "I just had a root canal, I'm not going to run 16 miles today." But you just go ahead and do it ALL! You really are amazing, Becky. There's no keeping you down!

Wow! I am so sorry to hear about the car accident, but glad you are both OK. This is definitely an example of resilience - it can happen any day! Lovely to see a photo of you and Cricket as well. :)

I agree with Mimi...how DO you do it all? Well, never mind answering that. We all know it's sheer awesomeness! ;-) That, and great supportive family and friends (Cricket definitely is included there!) So glad the accident wasn't worse. Take care, and good luck on the marathon! :-D

Our best wishes to Natalie as she recovers from her concussion - now you two can compare notes! How I wish people would not use their cell phones while driving. It's so dangerous. Congratulations on running the Deseret 10K. We'll root for you from afar when you run your marathon.
