My little red tether is my anchor in running with my friends. A beautiful guide dog has been my tether/anchor in mobility and independence for 17 years: 1. Pantera 2. Cricket, and now my beautiful 3. Georgina (Georgie). A life of family and friends is my joy and anchor in life.

The Secret is Out

We flew to San Rafael last Thursday with a special secret that would be presented at the Guide Dogs for the Blind Homecoming Celebration Dinner. As always, Cricket was very excited to hop on the plane and go off on an adventure. I must say it had felt like a long time since we had an adventure. She is such an easy, great traveller. My favorite comments on our flight over on the plane were - the flight attendant in doing the final check looked down and asked if we needed to put up then she stopped and said oh its living and breathing. As we stood up to leave the plane, the lady behind us said, oh my goodness there was a dog in the seat in front of me and I didn't even know. Good PR, Cricket girl.

This picture is of Cricket underneath the table at the banquet.  She knows the secret as did some other very special friends.
My dear friend, Debi, was to receive the Blondie Award, given to a volunteer who has demonstrated selfless, enthusiastic service to Guide Dogs for the Blind. This award is named in honor of the first Guide Dog, Blondie.  I cried as they called her name.  She is one of the  most giving, loving, kind, people that I am blessed to call my friend.  Our friendship began as she was the angel that cared for my first guide, 11 years ago as Pantera was recovering from surgery in Oregon.   I still recall the feeling of relief and gratitude I felt when they told me they had the most special woman who would be caring for my guide while  I had to leave her.  Guide Dogs for the Blind is very fortunate to have one of her passions to be Guide Dogs for the Blind.  The amount of hours and various ways she has volunteered and served inspires me each day.   So many people and dogs have been the grateful recipients of her generosity over many years.

I have known that Debi would be receiving this award for a couple months.  I have been so excited for this moment.  She gave a beautiful speech.   She serves so generously -  not for the recognition at all.  It was very special to see her recognized.  Congratulations, Debi.

I love the picture you took of her ...must have been just after announcing her name, and her surprise.

It is wonderful that life has "angels" like that .....people who make our lives, and the lives of our "dogs" the kind of which you need.....so much better.

I am glad you had a great time.
