Ah, Relax

I have always found taking a nice bath relaxing and energizing at the same time. Perhaps I am one of the last to bathe and not shower each morning? I love to relax, ponder, contemplate the day, listen to music, listen to a book, etc while enjoying a nice, hot bath. Sometimes if I can, I also end the day this way. My guide dog, Cricket, is always close by usually sitting right near the bathtub and keeping an eye on me (brings a smile to my face) Any list of self-nurturing activities that I give a client it is on the list. Funny - the other day I was talking to a client about the importance of her finding some healthy self-care activities for herself and I asked about a warm bath. She told me she had showered that day. We laughed as I realized that she thought I was asking her if she had good hygiene. No - I just often think of a nice relaxing bath as an option for self-care. Some others on the list are: walk in the park, get a manicure or pedicure, relax with a good book, stop and smell some flowers, sit on the porch and shell something, swing on the swings, spend time near a river, stream or creek, sit on a bridge with feet dangling over, dance to music (another one of my favorites), pot your plants (oh can't wait to do this in a few months), call a good friend, go to bed early, listen to soothing music, let yourself dawdle, ... the list goes on. What's your favorite Nurturing Activity?

In the past month as I have made some additional adjustments to my life with increased vision loss; I have found this to be a time of more self-nurturing as I make time to make these adjustments. Yes, a few times have had to say that NO word for requests (and that's okay), have increased my organization (excited haven't lost my phone for two weeks!), and have reached out to friends and family who have helped me in this journey - also have appreciated the encouraging comments and emails. Thank you!

Hi. My name is Laurel. I am in the process of getting a guide dog. I happened to find your blog and I am enjoying it quite a lot. I think it would be very good for me to get in touch with other guide dog users, especially people who are more experienced then myself. I am a Freshmen in college and I am working on getting my first dog, so I hope you don't mind me writing you. :) Have a great day!

I love baths too. Might have one tonight actually!
When I need to relax music is the first thing I think of. It doesn't necessarily have to be relaxing music, as long as its something I like. I enjoy walking to relax too.

Walking Cabana is my best self-care activity. I wouldn't do regularly it if it weren't for her! Sad that sometimes self-care is so low on our priority lists. Letting yourself dawdle--that's a great one!! I like that idea.

Yes, agree walking with a dog is a wonderful way to relax, exercise, and energize. There's lots of positive research on the benefits of a dog in your life!

My favourite self-care activitiy is to snuggle up to my guide dog and to always get both of us in a relaxed state of mind after he has done very well at guiding me around for quite some time. Examples: I tell him to take me to a bus stop, and then we sit on the grass while I pet him, cuddle him and give him a kiss. I lay my hand on his back so he lays his head in my lap or on the grass for a snooze while waiting for the bus. Most of the time he just looks around, wishing to stay comfortable like this forever. Another example is when he guides me to the shopping centre; I buy some food to eat or a drink of some sort, then after finding a table for me in spite of the crowds and thepeople sitting at them, I sit down and give Troy a nice rub from his head right down to the tail and give his face a quick little massage before eating my meal. the poor little creature must think I'm really out of my mind to spoil him so much! He deserves it.

Your bathroom is bigger than my apartment. Until then, I'll be taking showers in my small shower stall, cause well, that's all I have - and it's way better than nothing :-)

Michelle - that is SO sweet. It is apparent that you and your guide have such an incredible bond. Giving them that special thanks and love is so important.

I find that I feel so much better about myself and the challenges I'm facing if I just take time to breathe and do something that makes me relax. It helps put everything into perspective to think about who you are and what you really want to accomplish.
